Ever wonder why floral arrangements look so beautiful? After all, each one is carefully constructed so that each flower shines at its best. While designing a bouquet certainly isn't rocket science, it does take some practice and familiarity.
There are 3 different types of flowers that are used in arrangements; mass, filler and line. Each plays an important role in the function and beauty of the bouquet. Mass flowers are just as anyone would think they would be, big plants that are in the center of the bouquet. The mass styles are generally spotted first and feature larger structures that are round in shape. Some examples include roses, sunflowers and daffodils.
Fillers are also important to the shape of the bouquet and fill in the gaps that the mass flowers may have left. To make them appear larger and fill in more of the empty spaces, these fillers are often clustered on one stem. Best of all, they are cheaper in price than mass styles, yet can add to the size and fullness of the bouquet. Examples include baby's breath and ferns.
Finally, line flowers give the bouquet its shape and outline design. It's these blooms that make arrangements appear longer or wider in size. Generally, line blooms are used first when building the bouquet, because it acts as a base for the rest of the arrangement. Examples of these include cattails and snapdragons.
